I’ll admit, I have always been a little hungry for knowledge and wanted clear answers to specific questions. For a long time, I went through hundreds and hundreds of topics on Reddit and other platforms, wrote down all the questions about Bavaro Beach, and organized them by popularity.

Drone view of Bavaro Beach in the Dominican Republic on a sunny day

In the end, I decided to create an article where I answer the 66 most frequently asked questions about Bavaro Beach in the Dominican Republic. I want to say right away that my answers are based on my own knowledge and experience. By the way, there is already a big article about Bavaro Beach on my website where I shared a lot of useful information!

All the questions are divided into different topics, so I will answer them by popularity within each topic. The most common topics are: sargassum seaweed on the beach — sargassum / dangers at Bavaro Beach / the best time to visit, weather, and more. Let’s start with the seaweed on the beach!

Sargassum at Bavaro Beach

Is there sargassum on Bavaro Beach right now?

As sad as it sounds, if we answer “YES, ” there is a very good chance we will be right. Every year, there is more and more sargassum on Bavaro Beach because the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt keeps growing. I wrote about this phenomenon and sargassum in Bavaro in great detail in this article.

I also found several webcams showing different parts of Bavaro Beach. They work 24/7, so you can see the current condition of the beach right now!

The camera only works on computers (except in the Safari browser). On phones and tablets, the camera does not work properly. We apologize for the inconvenience.

In which months does Bavaro Beach have the least sargassum?

The logic here is very simple — the cooler the water and the weather, the less seaweed there is. I think the seaweed grows faster in warmer water, so there is more of it in summer. Based on my experience over the last decade, January, February, and March usually have the least sargassum on Bavaro Beach.

Months with the least sargassum at Bavaro Beach

How bad can sargassum get on Bavaro Beach in summer?

This is the hottest time of the year, and Bavaro Beach usually has the most sargassum during the summer months: June, July, and August.

Which hotels in Bavaro are the best at cleaning up sargassum?

The logic is very simple — the more expensive the hotel, the better it usually cleans up sargassum. But the amount of seaweed on the beach also depends on the location. In some areas, there is so much of it that it is impossible to remove it all. From what I have seen, there is less sargassum on the beaches of hotels located closer to Macao Beach. I will use an arrow to show the direction where the amount of seaweed decreases.

Can you swim at Bavaro Beach when there is sargassum?

It depends on how much there is. Sometimes the first 15 — 30 feet of water from the shore can be completely covered with seaweed, and getting into the water can be very unpleasant. Sargassum does not burn your skin or cause any harm, at least I have never heard anything like that from people. But sometimes it is simply unpleasant, and not everyone can make it through this difficult path to the clear water 😅

How can you do a photoshoot on Bavaro Beach if there is sargassum?

The most important thing is to find an experienced Punta Cana photographer who has lived in Punta Cana and Bavaro for a long time (like me 😁) and knows how to work with it! On my website, I regularly share photoshoots and show how you can get beautiful photos even when there is sargassum on the beach. For example, this one:

Can sargassum be removed from photos?

Yes! Today, it is pretty easy to do, and some photographers can remove it if needed. However, keep in mind that most photographers do not include this option in their photoshoot packages. Here is a clear example of how I do it:

What does a photoshoot on Bavaro Beach look like without sargassum?

Sometimes Bavaro Beach looks absolutely beautiful! The photos look like they belong on the cover of a fashion magazine! I’ll share a few of my photos.

What if there is only a little sargassum on the beach — is it a problem for a photoshoot?

A little seaweed is not a problem. The right angles and photography techniques make it possible to “cut out” the seaweed from the photos, and anything that remains can be removed during photo editing 😇

Are there sargassum barriers at Bavaro Beach?

Not everywhere. Some hotels install protective barriers, but you need to understand that when there is too much seaweed, they do not really help. Even in the luxury Cap Cana community, where there are many barriers, they do not always work 🤷‍♂️

Can there still be sargassum in the water after the beach has been cleaned?

Of course! Especially in summer, when there is a lot of sargassum. Sometimes the shore is completely clean, but sargassum is still floating in the water in different parts of the beach. The weather is calmer in summer, the waves are smaller, and the wind is weaker, so the seaweed either washes ashore very slowly or does not wash ashore at all.

How quickly do hotels clean the beach after sargassum washes ashore?

Hotels usually clean the beach in the morning. Some hotels may also clean it throughout the day. It all depends on the amount of sargassum. In winter, when there is less of it, the morning cleanup is usually enough to keep the beach clean for most of the day.

Can you predict sargassum before your travel dates?

It is difficult to predict even the weather a few days in advance, even though weather has been studied very well and there are so many programs for forecasting it. Predicting sargassum is almost impossible, but there is a general pattern by month. There is the most sargassum in summer and the least in winter. You can also choose hotels where there is generally less sargassum.

How can you do a family photoshoot on Bavaro Beach if there is a lot of sargassum?

The most important thing is the photographer’s experience! Those of us who have lived here for a long time know certain techniques that make it possible to take photos without sargassum. There is also always an option to go to a beach where there is no sargassum or much less of it. Here, for example, is a group family photoshoot on Bavaro Beach, and I will also add a link to my family photoshoot prices!

Where is there less sargassum in Bavaro: Los Corales, El Cortecito, or Bibijagua?

In my experience, El Cortecito is better, followed by Los Corales, while Bibijagua usually has the most sargassum. But I would also add Arena Gorda Beach — in my opinion, this part of Bavaro Beach is usually the cleanest. On the map, I will mark all these beaches with different colors: blue — Arena Gorda Beach, red — Arena Blanca Beach, yellow — El Cortecito, purple — Los Corales, and green — Bibijagua. Together, all these beaches make up Bavaro Beach 🤓

Is it worth choosing Bayahibe instead of Bavaro because of sargassum?

If seaweed is a very important issue for you and your main priority is the beach and swimming, it is worth considering the Bayahibe tourist area. Usually, there is no sargassum there, although lately there has been so much of it that some reaches Bayahibe too. Still, there is usually very little sargassum there. However, keep in mind that Bayahibe is a less developed tourist area, and the infrastructure is not as good as in Bavaro and Punta Cana.

Map showing why Bayahibe usually has less sargassum than Punta Cana

How much does sargassum affect the smell on the beach?

When sargassum stays on the beach for a long time and starts to decompose, it releases hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, according to research published on ScienceDirect. Of course, the smell is not very pleasant, but for people who live near the ocean, it is a pretty common and normal smell. For example, this smell does not bother me at all 😇

Does the water become cloudy because of sargassum?

It depends on how much sargassum there is and how long it stays in the water. If the sargassum has been in the water for about a day, the water usually stays clear, but if it stays longer — when the seaweed starts to decompose — the water turns brownish and becomes very cloudy.

Is it worth going to Macao Beach if there is a lot of sargassum on Bavaro Beach?

Yes, Macao Beach is often much cleaner than Bavaro Beach, and you can get there by taxi pretty quickly — about 20 — 40 minutes, depending on where your hotel is located in Bavaro. People also often go there for a photoshoot on Macao Beach. It has big waves and a wide, open shoreline.

Which beaches near Bavaro Beach have less seaweed?

There is a very beautiful beach called Esmeralda Beach. Usually, there is no seaweed there, but it takes more than an hour to get there from Bavaro.

Drone view of Esmeralda Beach in the Dominican Republic

If you drive toward the town of Miches, you will find many different wild beaches along the way to Esmeralda Beach: Vacama Beach, Nisibon Beach, Barbacoa Beach, El Limón Beach, and others. Usually, all of them are pretty clean and have very little seaweed, but there is no infrastructure. By the way, the roads there are usually very bad, and if it is raining — I do not recommend going there because you may have trouble getting back out.

I will also leave the locations of these beaches here:

Are there any live webcams or sources where you can check the current condition of Bavaro Beach before your trip?

Yes, there are several webcams that show Bavaro Beach 24/7. Enjoy.

Natural danger at bavaro beach

In general, the Dominican Republic is considered a very safe country when it comes to nature. There are no venomous snakes, dangerous scorpions, or other major natural dangers here. Mosquitoes bite, of course. and they can carry some diseases, but in most cases they are not deadly. It is a very very very safe country, but there are still some unpleasant creatures that can be dangerous.

Are there jellyfish or other unpleasant sea creatures at Bavaro Beach?

I really love snorkeling and sometimes go spearfishing, so I have some experience with this. To be honest, I have very rarely seen jellyfish at Bavaro Beach. But you can find them in Punta Cana, at Playa Blanca. This is the Portuguese man o’ war. Even if you see one on the shore, it is better not to touch it because it can still sting you!

But there are also some other sea creatures that can be a little dangerous!

How dangerous are moray eels at Bavaro Beach?

Moray eels are among the most aggressive fish, but usually they are just protecting their home and live in cracks and holes. Do not put your hands into places like this because they can bite you.

This happened to me once, and a moray eel almost bit off my finger. Now I do not put my fingers into holes anymore 😄

Are there pufferfish in the Dominican Republic?

There are also pufferfish here, which can inflate themselves. Their spines are not dangerous, but it is better not to eat them because some of their organs and tissues contain a very toxic substance — tetrodotoxin. I have seen many of these fish near the shore, and they look very cute and funny.

Are lionfish dangerous?

A few times, I have seen small lionfish very close to the shore. They are very calm and do not attack people, but it is better to stay away from them because some of their fins have sharp spines that contain pretty strong venom. I have never been stung by one, but locals say it is very painful, although not deadly.

How dangerous are stingrays at Bavaro Beach?

I also had one unpleasant experience with them. There are places at Bavaro Beach where many stingrays live very close to the shore. They usually lie on the bottom and sometimes even bury themselves a little in the sand. I always see them at the very beginning of Bavaro Beach, in front of the Barcelo Bavaro Beach hotel.

Stingrays have a sharp spine on their tail, and it also contains venom. One day, I was walking along the beach and accidentally stepped on a stingray, and it stung me with its spine. Locals told me it was not deadly, but it was very painful for the first 20 — 30 minutes … Later, the pain went away. So be careful when walking in shallow water in these areas. In general, stingrays are very cute and friendly, but they can sting you.

Do huge manta rays live at Bavaro Beach?

A couple of times, I was lucky enough to see huge manta rays very close to the shore. And when I say “huge, ” I am not exaggerating. I think their wingspan was about 6 — 10 feet, and I definitely felt scared, even though it was only because of their size. They are completely harmless and cannot hurt people, but when a giant like that is swimming toward you, it can be a little scary 😅

Are there sharks at Bavaro Beach?

Over the past 20 years, there have been no recorded fatal shark attacks at Bavaro Beach, although one attack was documented in 2016. The person was taken to the hospital, but their life was not in danger.

Are there sea urchins at Bavaro Beach?

Sea urchins like reefs and rocky surfaces, so they usually end up on sandy areas only by accident. Most of Bavaro Beach is not a good place for them because the bottom is mostly sand, but there are some areas with a rocky bottom, and you need to be very careful there. In the Dominican Republic, I have mostly seen two types of sea urchins — black ones with long spines and white ones with short spines.

White and black sea urchins found near Bavaro Beach

In my opinion, the white ones are pretty harmless, although stepping on one can still be unpleasant. But the black ones … you should be more careful with them. Their spines are very sharp and hard, almost like pencil lead. If you step on one, the spines can easily go into your foot, and when you try to pull them out, they can break, making it very difficult to remove them completely!

Is sargassum dangerous at Bavaro Beach?

Sometimes, sargassum that washes ashore leaves behind small spiky balls. They are very small, but they can be a little sharp, especially if your feet are sensitive. So be careful and watch where you step.

Are there mosquitoes at Bavaro Beach?

Oh, they can cause a lot of trouble. I could write a whole dissertation about mosquitoes in the Dominican Republic because they are the only thing I really do not like about this beautiful country. Of course, you need to know your enemy, so I have studied them very well! They are small, fast, and there are a lot of them. In my country, mosquitoes are very slow and easy to kill, but here. these are next-level mosquitoes.

Even during the day, even in the sun, even if you go into the water — they can follow you … Mosquitoes can also carry some diseases! What can you do? In my opinion, only one thing really helps — a repellent spray like OFF. It works for a couple of hours, and then the effect wears off. Another effective method is dancing 😅 As funny as it sounds, this actually works best. If you keep moving, mosquitoes do not have enough time to land and bite you!

What are those tiny biting bugs at Bavaro Beach?

This is another very unpleasant problem. Tiny no-see-ums are so small that you probably will not even see them when you feel a bite. But after some time, red bumps with VERY STRONG itching can appear … Luckily, there are almost no no-see-ums at Bavaro Beach. They usually live in shady areas where there is almost no wind. If you feel something biting your legs but cannot see anything — it may be them, so leave that area. Once, I was completely covered in bites from these tiny bugs … I had 40 — 50 bites on each leg, and my legs were itching for several days … it was a complete nightmare.

General questions about Bavaro Beach

This beach is quite unique because of several special features, which is why it is so popular and why the largest tourist area in the entire Dominican Republic is located here! By my count, there are about 100 large and small hotels here, and more are built every year!

How hot does the sand get at Bavaro Beach?

One unique feature of Bavaro Beach is that the sand does not get hot at all. The secret is that this fine, white sand was formed from broken-down coral, and coral has the ability to stay cool. Of course, I cannot confirm that this information is 100% true, but this is what locals say. So unlike many other beaches, the sand here is not hot even in the middle of the day, and you can easily walk barefoot.

How clean is the sand at Bavaro Beach?

If there is no sargassum, the sand is very clean, white, soft, and beautiful for photoshoots. By the way, one of the advantages of white sand for photography is that it works like a reflector and lights people from below, which makes the photos look more beautiful. Bavaro Beach is a great place for an individual photoshoot or a love story photoshoot! I will add the prices for them below 😎

How clear is the water at Bavaro Beach on a normal day?

I would say — very clear. In general, when there is no seaweed, Bavaro Beach looks beautiful — white sand and clear blue water. Bavaro Beach is a beautiful location for any type of photoshoot.

Daytime love story photoshoot for a couple at Bavaro Beach

Is the water at Bavaro Beach really turquoise like in the advertising photos?

In great weather and without seaweed — yes! It really looks just like the advertising photos. But it is better to show it once than talk about it a lot. Here are a few photos so you can see how beautiful this beach is.

When is the high season at Bavaro Beach with the most tourists?

The high season at Bavaro Beach is winter: December, January, and February! These are the busiest tourist months, and all services and activities have the fullest schedules. Why? Because the weather is more comfortable in winter, and while many countries have cold weather and snow, it is summer here.

Does Bavaro Beach look like the photos in travel ads?

Yes and no… Of course, the photos used in advertising show Bavaro Beach at its best, and it really can look like that! However, lately there has been more and more sargassum. So now, when there is much more seaweed on the beach than 20 years ago, the beach does not always look as attractive 😅

Can you find a quiet tropical beach atmosphere in Bavaro?

To be honest — probably not, except maybe at the far ends of the beach where there are no hotels or people. You need to understand that there are more than 100 hotels along almost the entire length of Bavaro Beach, and there are always a lot of people here. Tropical? Yes! Quiet? Probably not … On the map, I will mark the places where Bavaro Beach can feel quiet and tropical.

Map showing the quietest areas of Bavaro Beach

Where are the best places for a photoshoot on Bavaro Beach?

Bavaro Beach looks pretty similar along its entire coastline, so you can have a great photoshoot almost anywhere. In my opinion, a better question would be — what time and with which photographer can you get the best photoshoot at Bavaro Beach? As for the time — definitely the first part of the day, before 10 — 11 AM. The sun shines from the ocean, and this is the best time for a photoshoot. And when it comes to the photographer, of course I would recommend myself 😅

When are there the fewest people at Bavaro Beach?

Sunrise and early morning are the best times if you want to see Bavaro Beach without crowds or have a photoshoot.

Are there palm trees and natural shade right on Bavaro Beach?

You can find both almost everywhere! Depending on the location, the first 15 — 100 feet from the ocean is just sandy beach, and then the palm trees begin. In some places they are thicker, in others more spread out, but you can find them almost everywhere. In some areas, the palm trees start right by the water.

Do boats ruin the beautiful ocean view?

There are only a few places where boats are parked on the water. In most areas of Bavaro Beach, there are almost no boats at all. But in my opinion, even where there are boats, they fit nicely into the tropical scenery and do not stop you from enjoying the ocean and the beautiful low Dominican clouds.

Safety at Bavaro Beach

In my opinion, the Dominican Republic is one of the safest countries in Latin America. Also, the Punta Cana and Bavaro tourist area is the most popular destination in the Dominican Republic, and security is very high in places like this. Tourism is a very important part of the Dominican Republic’s economy, so the government takes security in these areas very seriously. Still, theft and scams can happen, so you should always stay alert! Even in the safest countries, different types of crime can happen sometimes.

Is it safe to walk on Bavaro Beach during the day?

I think it is very safe. Still, you should always stay alert. Do not leave your belongings unattended on the beach because theft is very common here. Also, do not buy illegal substances on the beach. Be careful when buying different services, such as excursions, from unlicensed sellers.

Is it safe to walk on Bavaro Beach at night?

In my opinion — yes, it is safe. I do it often and have very rarely seen anything dangerous. However, at night there are a few additional risks. First — drunk tourists. Second — suspicious people selling illegal substances. Although they usually do not want to attract attention and are unlikely to be dangerous. Bavaro Beach is also not very well lit at night, so you could step on broken glass, although I have never seen this happen. There may also be more pickpockets and thieves at night looking for drunk or distracted people.

Is it safe for a woman to travel alone in the Bavaro area?

Personally, I think it is safe. Locals may flirt, joke around, or whistle, but they are generally very friendly and not dangerous. Of course, anything can happen, but negative news involving tourists in Bavaro is very rare. In any case, always stay aware and alert, and of course, I think it is better for women to travel with their men!

Is it safe to leave the hotel property?

There is a very common myth at hotels in the Dominican Republic that leaving the hotel property is very dangerous. I can understand when they say this at hotels in Santo Domingo because it can be a pretty dangerous city. However, in Punta Cana and Bavaro, in my opinion, the danger is exaggerated. Of course, you need to stay alert and avoid trouble, just like in any country. But in Punta Cana and Bavaro, the biggest danger is traffic. Cars here sometimes drive very fast, so you need to be very careful near the road. Other than that, it is very calm and safe here.

Is it safe to buy excursions from sellers on Bavaro Beach?

There are always pros and cons. If you buy an excursion at your hotel, it will most likely cost more, but it is safer. Buying on the beach is more risky, but cheaper. In my opinion, if you want to save money, look for trusted tour agencies online. Usually, their prices are lower, and booking with them can be just as safe as booking at your hotel.

How pushy are the sellers on Bavaro Beach?

In my opinion — moderately pushy. In any case, they are very friendly. Overall, there are not that many sellers on Bavaro Beach.

How can you politely say no to beach sellers?

I have been studying this question for many years because people often think I am a tourist and try to sell me an excursion or another service. My experience shows that the most effective way is to simply ignore them completely. And do not worry about offending them. They deal with hundreds of customers like this every day, so they are used to it.

What should you do if a seller or promoter is too pushy?

Politely say, “Thank you, I’m not interested, ” turn around, and simply walk away. Ignoring them is the best way to end the conversation as quickly as possible.

Is it safe to use a credit card outside the hotel?

If you are paying at a store — it is pretty safe, but I would use Google Pay or Apple Pay because it is more secure. I also would not hand my card directly to sellers because the card usually has all the information someone could steal. Dominicans are very friendly and honest, but dishonest people can be found anywhere. In Dominican restaurants, sometimes they take your card and walk away with it to process the payment.

Is there security on the beaches in front of the hotels?

Yes, every hotel has security. However, there are not that many security guards, and most of the time they are there to help in an emergency. They also make sure that people who are not staying at the hotel do not use the hotel’s beach chairs and other facilities. You should not expect them to watch your belongings.

How safe is it to leave your phone and bag by your beach chair?

Every hotel has its own security guards, but to be honest, the beaches are large and there are not that many guards. They physically cannot watch everything. Bavaro Beach is public, and absolutely anyone can access it. Petty theft is pretty common in the Dominican Republic. So I would not recommend leaving your phone or bag unattended. Unless you do not mind saying goodbye to them 😁

Should you carry your passport to the beach?

I would not carry my passport with me. I would keep it in a safe or another secure place. You can lose your passport, or a quick thief could take it from your pocket. Then you may have problems getting back home, and nobody needs those problems 😇

Should you buy cigars and souvenirs from beach sellers?

If you are sure that the souvenirs are much cheaper than at the hotel and are the same quality, then why not?! But when it comes to cigars — absolutely not! Beach sellers usually store cigars at home at normal room temperature and humidity. The cigars dry out and lose their quality. Cigars need to be stored in special humidors with a specific, stable humidity level to keep their quality.

Weather in Punta Cana and Bavaro

The weather in the Dominican Republic can be very different depending on the part of the country. In this article, we will talk specifically about the Punta Cana — Bavaro tourist area.

What are the best months for a vacation at Bavaro Beach?

For this part of the Dominican Republic, winter is the most comfortable time for a vacation. In winter, the weather is not as hot, and there is usually a nice breeze, so you do not feel too hot. In summer, for example, temperatures are higher, humidity is higher, and there is almost no wind, so it can feel too hot. In my opinion — November through March are the best months to visit.

What are the cheapest months for a vacation at Bavaro Beach?

The cheapest months are when fewer people visit. Fewer people come because the weather during these months is less comfortable — too hot, humid, and with very little wind. The lowest season at Bavaro Beach is from June through September. However, one big advantage is that rentals and other services are much cheaper, people are much more willing to negotiate prices, and there is plenty of availability.

What is the weather like in Bavaro in January?

One of the best months! The weather is warm but not too hot, with average daytime temperatures around 26 — 28°C (79 — 82°F). There is a refreshing breeze, and rain usually comes at night. The humidity feels much lower than in summer, and overall, the weather is very comfortable for a vacation. January is considered one of the busiest tourist months.

What is the weather like in Bavaro in February and March?

February and March are the end of the high season. The weather is still very comfortable, but spring is starting, which means hotter weather is coming, there is less wind, and the humidity starts to feel stronger.

What is the weather like in Bavaro in April?

Summer is getting closer, and in April the humidity rises quickly, making the heat feel much stronger.

What is the weather like in Bavaro in May?

The heat increases, with average temperatures around 28 — 30°C (82 — 86°F) and high humidity. At the end of May, an interesting phenomenon sometimes appears — Saharan dust. The air becomes hazy, and people with asthma and other respiratory conditions may feel that it becomes much harder to breathe.

What is the weather like in Bavaro in June and July?

Very hot, almost no wind, Saharan dust, high humidity. In general, this is the beginning of the lowest tourist season. In July, the Saharan dust usually goes away. Temperatures can reach 30°C (86°F). Very hot!

What is the weather like in Bavaro in August and September?

These are the hottest months in Bavaro. Temperatures can reach 30 — 32°C (86 — 90°F), there is little wind, and it is very humid. Sometimes there can be drought because there is very little rain.

What is the weather like in Bavaro in October?

In October, temperatures start to drop quickly, the wind returns, the humidity goes down, and the tourist season slowly begins.

Is there a rainy season in Bavaro?

I do not know why so many sources write about a rainy season in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic in general. There is no rainy season here. Rain falls regularly at night. Sometimes there is bad weather and it can rain for a whole week, usually in winter, but that is simply bad weather. There is no real rainy season here like in Thailand. The Dominican Republic has great weather all year round!

OH! When I started writing this article, I thought it would be a little shorter. But I wanted to answer every question with as much useful information as possible, so the article turned out to be pretty long! But I hope it helps you. If you are ready for a photoshoot — contact me and let’s go take some amazing photos! Thank you for reading, and have a great vacation at Bavaro Beach! 😇
