It may have been named after a German colonist who was known by the locals as “the Bavarian” since the word Bávaro means a person from Bavaria. The first known references to the name date back to 1890, when the area appeared on maps as Punta Bávaro and Puerto Bávaro. At that time, it was a small trading and stopping point connected to the city of Higüey, which was founded in 1503. Punta Bávaro was located on what is now Bavaro Beach. Over time, the beach inherited the name, and later the growing town became known as Bavaro as well.
Why is Bavaro Beach so famous?
Most of the large resorts in the area are located here, which is why almost everyone knows Bavaro Beach. By my count, there are around 100 large and small hotels along the coast. The region welcomes more than 5 million tourists every year, and that number keeps growing. Recently, developers have also started building entire communities of villas and apartments on a massive scale.
An interesting fact is that Bavaro Beach (purple line) is much more recognizable than the town of Bavaro (1) itself. For some reason, many people think they’re staying in Punta Cana, even though the town of Punta Cana (2) is actually located near Punta Cana International Airport (3). It makes perfect sense that Bavaro Beach got its name because it’s located in the town of Bavaro.
By the way, among all the islands in the Caribbean, Bavaro Beach is considered one of the most famous beaches. It’s huge and stretches along the entire coastline of Bavaro. Based on my measurements, it’s about 12–13 kilometers (7.5–8 miles) long. On the map, you’ll also find names like Cortecito Beach, Arena Blanca Beach, and Arena Gorda Beach, but they’re all part of the same long stretch of Bavaro Beach.

Where is Bavaro Beach located?
In my opinion, Bavaro Beach starts near Barceló (1) and ends at Hard Rock (2). On the map below, I’ll show you these resorts, along with Cortecito Beach (3), Arena Blanca Beach (4), and Arena Gorda Beach (5), which are all part of the same stretch of Bavaro Beach.
However, you can’t access the beach from every location. The resorts are built right next to each other, and their grounds are private. The good news is that Bavaro Beach itself is public. In fact, all beaches in the Dominican Republic are public by law. According to Law No. 305-68, the first 60 meters (about 200 feet) from the shoreline cannot be privately owned.
This means you can walk along the entire beach without any restrictions, but you can’t enter or leave the beach from just anywhere because of the private resort properties. Don’t worry, though. I’ll show you several public access (purple lines) points in different parts of Bavaro Beach, so you can get there without any problems.

The best places for a photoshoot on Bavaro Beach
Bavaro Beach is one of the best places for a photoshoot in the Dominican Republic. The white sand not only looks beautiful in photos but also acts as a natural reflector, making the light softer and giving your pictures a more professional look. Another big advantage is that the sand doesn’t get hot, so walking barefoot during your photoshoot is comfortable even on sunny days. This is one of the unique features of many beaches in the Dominican Republic. The sand is made from crushed coral, which stays cool even under the tropical sun.
The only downside is the number of tourists. Bavaro Beach is public and one of the busiest beaches in the area, so it’s rare to find it completely empty. Fortunately, local professional photographers have plenty of experience shooting here. We know how to frame photos without crowds in the background, where to find quieter spots, and what time of day is best for a peaceful photoshoot.

It’s also worth mentioning that the ocean conditions are very different depending on which part of Bavaro Beach you’re visiting.
Near Barceló Resort (point 2 on the map), the water is usually very calm because the coral reef protects the shoreline from the waves. This is the perfect area for family photoshoots and sessions with young children. The water stays calm almost all the way to the pirate ship bridge (point 1).
Farther north, toward Hard Rock, the reef becomes smaller and the waves get much stronger. Around Paradisus Resort (point 3), the waves are already quite noticeable, making it a little less comfortable for families with small children. Near Hard Rock, the waves can become quite impressive, creating an amazing setting for a couple’s photoshoot, love story session, or an individual portrait session.
Of course, these aren’t the only beautiful places for a photoshoot. There are many great locations along Bavaro Beach, and every experienced Punta Cana photographer knows them well. I could simply tell you that the best photographer in Punta Cana is Alex Po — that’s me — but that wouldn’t be entirely true. I’m lucky to have many talented colleagues here, and there are plenty of photographers in Punta Cana who truly love what they do and create beautiful work.
Best time for a photoshoot on Bavaro Beach
Bavaro Beach is perfect for a photoshoot in the first half of the day — either at sunrise or 2–3 hours after sunrise. The sun rises over the ocean, and the light is very soft and beautiful. Also, after the night, it is cooler here, and there are not many people in the morning. Definitely, a photoshoot in the first half of the day, before 10–11 AM, is the best time for this beach.

What Should You Wear for a Photoshoot on Bavaro Beach?
I believe that the way you feel is the way you look. If you’re wearing your favorite outfit and you feel confident in it, you’ll look your best in the photos. So my first piece of advice is simple: wear what you love! That said, here are a few tips that can make your Bavaro Beach photoshoot even better.
1. Clothing Colors
Neutral colors work best — white, black, gray, beige, or soft pastel shades. It’s better to avoid bright colors, especially if you’re wearing several of them. One bright color can work if it doesn’t draw too much attention, but two or more usually become distracting.
The beach already has two strong colors — green from the palm trees and blue from the ocean and sky. Your outfit shouldn’t compete with them. Instead, it should complement the natural scenery.
2. Clothing Style
We’ll be moving during the photoshoot, so your clothes should be comfortable and lightweight. Linen outfits or light tropical-style clothing are a great choice. They look natural, feel comfortable, and move beautifully in the breeze.
3. Let Your Photographer Help
Every photographer is also a bit of a stylist. A great idea is to bring a few of your favorite outfits. Once we’re at the beach, I’ll help you choose the one that works best with the location and lighting.
4. Accessories

Seaweed on Bavaro Beach
I’ll be honest — lately, there has been more seaweed on Bavaro
Beach. But first, it’s cleaned up regularly, and second, there are still many
days when the beach is completely clear. If you’re planning a Bavaro Beach photoshoot,
there are plenty of ways to hide the seaweed, so it won’t appear in your
photos.
Another option is to choose a different beach where there’s little or no seaweed. Macao Beach usually has less seaweed, and the private Amor Beach is cleaned every morning. We can also go to Esmeralda Beach, where seaweed is very rare.
It’s important to understand that what you see with your own eyes and what you see in the final photos are two different things. Professional camera equipment, when used correctly, allows a photographer to create images without people or visible seaweed. Of course, this takes experience and skill, so choose your photographer carefully.

Yes! Bavaro Beach is a public beach, and it’s completely free to visit. Anyone can come here to relax. Also, under Dominican Law No. 305-68, all beaches in the Dominican Republic are public and cannot be privately owned.
Is Bavaro Beach safe?
Yes, Bavaro Beach is considered very safe, especially in the tourist area. The main thing to watch out for is petty theft. Don’t leave your belongings unattended while you go swimming.
Sometimes small pieces of sharp seaweed wash ashore, so it’s a good idea to watch where you step. As for marine life, moray eels can occasionally be found hiding in rocks or holes. They usually don’t bother anyone, but they may bite if you stick your hand into their hiding place. I actually had this happen once and almost lost a finger.
Is there a lot of seaweed on Bavaro Beach?
Recently, there has been more seaweed, but it’s cleaned up every morning. Seaweed usually arrives in waves, so there are often times when the beach has just been cleaned and the new seaweed hasn’t arrived yet. There are also weeks, and sometimes even months, when there’s almost no seaweed at all.
Can we swim at Bavaro Beach?
Absolutely! Most of Bavaro Beach is protected by a coral reef, so the water is calm, warm, and perfect for swimming. The area closer to the Barceló Resort is especially great for families with children because there are almost never any waves.
How long is Bavaro Beach?
Bavaro Beach is about 7.5–8 miles (12–13 km) long. It includes areas such as Cortecito Beach, Arena Blanca, Arena Gorda, and several others.

Are there sharks at Bavaro Beach?

When is the best time to visit Bavaro Beach?
The Dominican Republic has warm weather all year, but there are still seasons. The most comfortable months to visit are from October through April. From May to September, the weather becomes much hotter and more humid.
Does Bavaro Beach have big waves or calm water?
It depends on which part of the beach you’re visiting. If you divide Bavaro Beach into two sections, the area closer to the Barceló Resort has very calm water because it’s protected by the reef. The closer you get to the Hard Rock area, the bigger the waves become, since there’s much less reef protection there.
Where Are the Heart Shapes on Bavaro Beach?
I want to share something interesting about Bavaro Beach that not many people know. One day I was flying my drone over the beach, filming some content, when I noticed perfectly shaped hearts in the water. Later, some locals told me that these hearts had actually been cut into the seagrass on the ocean floor.
What’s even more interesting is that they’ve been there for a long time and have kept their shape. That’s because most of the coastline in Bavaro is protected by a coral reef, so there are no strong waves or powerful currents to wash them away.
What’s at the end of Bavaro Beach?
Bavaro Beach officially begins at the Barceló Resort (red line). Before that, you’ll find the wild and less developed part of Cabeza de Toro Beach (purple line).
But what’s even more interesting is how Bavaro Beach ends. One day I was flying my drone over this area and discovered something amazing. The last resort on Bavaro Beach is the Hard Rock Hotel. After that comes a wild, undeveloped section of the beach. Farther down, the coastline turns rocky, and that’s where Macao Beach begins. The entire area is closed to the public, and you can’t drive there. From Macao Beach, the cliffs block the view, and that side is also restricted. So the only way to see what’s on top of the cliffs is either by flying a drone or by walking all the way to the end of Bavaro Beach. And that’s where you’ll find a huge abandoned hotel.
I couldn’t find any 100% confirmed information about it—only local stories and rumors. According to locals, a wealthy businessman started building the hotel but passed away before it was completed. His three sons inherited equal shares of the property, but they have never reached an agreement on how to manage it, so construction was never finished. Another story says the hotel never received all the permits it needed, which is why it was left unfinished. What is interesting, though, is that the golf courses on the property are still kept in perfect condition, and the area is guarded 24/7.
