But no matter how you look at it, the most important thing in life is a big, close family 🙂 And not only your immediate family — husband, wife, and children, but the whole family — grandparents, aunts, uncles, and their families. In this article, I will tell you about one very close and wonderful family from India that I was lucky to photograph at Hard Rock Punta Cana.

Bavaro Beach is very large, stretching for 12-13 kilometers. Depending on where the photo session takes place, the scenery and the sea can look very different. If you want to learn more about the beach itself, I wrote a detailed article — Bavaro Beach in Punta Cana, where you can find answers to almost any question.
Photo session at Hard Rock Punta Cana
From what I have seen, the sea at Bavaro Beach in this area is very rough — there are always big waves that wash away the shore, so the beach has a slight slope. One big advantage of Hard Rock Punta Cana is its huge property and very long beachfront. There is always plenty of space on the beach for a photo session. It is also one of the largest hotels in Punta Cana and Bavaro. So even though the resort can accommodate a large number of guests, there is usually enough space for everyone, and the beach is not very crowded.

There are single palm trees here, as well as plenty of hotel infrastructure, and of course white sand, just like along the entire Bavaro Beach. By the way, when I first visited Bavaro Beach, I was very surprised that the sand here does not get hot. Even in the middle of the day, during the hottest hours, you can easily walk barefoot on it, and it does not burn your feet — it feels like some kind of magic! Locals say this is because much of the sand was formed from broken-down white coral, which does not get hot in the sun. Well… I’m getting distracted by legends and stories again!

There were 16 people at our photo session — several families, as well as the grandmother and grandfather. I love photo sessions like this — lots of energy, lots of activity, constant fun chaos, little arguments and drama, but what family can do without them 😅
The best time for a photo session at Bavaro Beach
There is no such thing as the best time! It is more accurate to say — the right time for the result you want to get. If we want bright, beautiful photos, there are several important things to consider for a large family photo session:
- Everyone should feel comfortable
- There should be fewer people on the beach
- The photos should look happy and everyone should have fun
Now let’s try to find the best time for a large family photo session! For example, what about the middle of the day, from 12 to 3 PM?! It is true that there will be very few people on the beach, but why? Because it will be unbearably hot. In this weather, being in the direct sun is very uncomfortable, and even more than that — there is a risk of heatstroke or sunburn. After something like this, it is hard to stay happy and have fun — so this does not work for us 👎 Let’s keep going!

What if we do the photo session right at sunrise?! At this time, there are almost no people on the beach, and the temperature is very comfortable. However, it is impossible to get bright and sunny photos because the light is yellow, so everything will have yellow tones. This option is not for us either, so let’s keep going 😉

And if we do the photo session at sunset, there will also be a lot of people. Everyone has already had enough sleep, the heat is gone, and people go for a walk on the beach before or after dinner.

What if we do the photo session between midday and sunset?! This is a comfortable time, and the photos come out bright and beautiful. However, there are already many people on the beach, and they will also make it harder to get a good shot. Again, this is not our option because we need beautiful, vibrant photos without crowds of people in the background!

So what time is left? That’s right! Between sunrise and midday. The ideal time is from around 8-9 AM until 10-11 AM. The temperature is comfortable, there are very few people on the beach, and the light is great! The photos come out bright and beautiful 👍

What to do if it is cloudy and there is no sun?
This kind of weather has its pros and cons. One big advantage is that a photo session is very comfortable because the sun is not so hot. However, this can be very misleading. Clouds reduce the direct heat from the sun, so you do not feel as hot, but the problem is that UV rays can still pass through them, and you can get sunburned. During a one-hour morning photo session, this will not happen, but in the middle of the day, you can get badly sunburned! I strongly recommend being careful 🤓

For most people, cloudy weather is a downside because the bright colors of the sea and sky disappear. Everything becomes quite pale and a little sad. Less often, some people actually like this because the photos come out soft and with less contrast.
What happens if it rains?
Rain is common in the Dominican Republic, but it usually does not last long. It may rain for 10-15 minutes and then quickly stop. Long, heavy rains are a different story. Usually, any professional photographer in Punta Cana tracks bad weather using different websites and apps. In most cases, we can know with a very high level of certainty when bad weather is coming. Personally, I offer a weather guarantee — if it rains, we will move the photo session to another day.
Poses or natural photos?!
Definitely natural photos! In my opinion, only natural photos with real emotions and the real you can show your true beauty. Of course, sometimes we need poses, but we are not taking passport photos, right? 😁

When a photo is natural and emotional, it looks and feels completely different. These photos bring positive feelings, create interest, and stay in your memory much better. And when we look at a photo, we want to remember those happy emotions we had during the photo session and the trip. In fact, with a photo session, we are not simply capturing beautiful images. We are creating a connection to the memories of those happy and warm days in the Dominican Republic 😍

Can you bring an outside photographer to Hard Rock Punta Cana?
Yes! But you need official permission, and it will cost a lot! Why?! Because the resort has its own photographers, and they want you to book this service with them.
Can you have a photo session outside Hard Rock Punta Cana?
Yes! If you have a small family, in my opinion — this is the best option! You will see a new place, a new beach, so it will be like a little trip. The closest beach for a photo session near Hard Rock Punta Cana is the wild Macao Beach. It looks especially beautiful in winter!
By the way, there is a very popular myth promoted by resorts that it is very dangerous outside the resort and that you will be kidnapped, robbed, and eaten… Let’s use some logic. If you stay at the resort for your entire vacation, you will spend all your money inside the resort. If you leave the resort, you will also spend money outside. So who benefits from this myth? I won’t point fingers, I think you already understand everything 😅
It takes about 15-20 minutes by car to get from Hard Rock Punta Cana to the wild Macao Beach. You can get there by Uber, but usually the photographer arranges the transportation. At least with me, transportation is included in the photo session. Transportation is arranged from the resort to the beach and, after the photo session, from the beach back to the resort.

Can people be removed from the background of a photo?!
There is a special area at Macao Beach where photographers do photo sessions, and there are no people there. In any case, we can always clean up a photo and remove unwanted things — people or seaweed.

When will the photos be ready?
The usual waiting time is from a few days to a few weeks. I would like to say that it all depends on how busy the photographer is, but I’ll say it depends on how lazy the photographer is. Personally, I deliver the photos the next day. I think if you want to share beautiful vacation photos, it makes sense to post them while you are still on vacation, not a month after it. Sargassum seaweed at Hard Rock Punta Cana Beach
I have noticed that this part of Bavaro Beach, where Hard Rock Punta Cana is located, usually has the least amount of sargassum. By the way, if you are interested in where it comes from, I wrote a detailed article — Sargassum Seaweed at Bavaro Beach, where I explained where it comes from. I also added a couple of beach webcams to the article so you can check the beach in real time! In this article, I will share a webcam that is always running at Hard Rock Punta Cana.
Frequently asked questions:
Can you have a photo session at Hard Rock Punta Cana Beach?
Of course! The resort has a huge property with beautiful landscaping. Hard Rock Punta Cana has a very long white-sand beach, beautiful big waves, and blue water. There are also many single palm trees on the beach. Overall, it is a great location for a photo session.
Are there photographers at Hard Rock Punta Cana?
Yes. Almost every resort has its own photographers. You can get all the details at the front desk.
Can you bring your own photographer to Hard Rock Punta Cana?
Yes! But you need permission for the photographer, and it can be very expensive. I cannot give you the exact price because it changes from time to time, but it can cost hundreds of dollars, and permission for a wedding photographer can even cost thousands of dollars. Why? Because the resort does not benefit when you pay someone from outside the resort, and they want you to use the resort’s services.
What should you do if your own photographer is not allowed into the resort?
You can have a photo session outside the resort. Every professional photographer in Punta Cana knows the best beaches in the area and will be happy to do a photo session at a neutral location. You can get to the photo session location by Uber, or the photographer can arrange transportation to the beach and back to the resort.
How to choose a photographer in Punta Cana?
A professional photographer in Punta Cana will be listed in many places. They will have their own website with prices and other useful information. They will also be listed on Google Maps, other local websites, Instagram, and Facebook. A photographer who works professionally and honestly does not hide who they are. Among these photographers, you can choose based on their portfolio and which photos you like the most. Message a few photographers, talk to them, and you will quickly understand which photographer is right for you and which one is not. I can recommend a great photographer in Punta Cana — Alex Po, although that’s me 😁 but I can only be sure about myself that with me you will get great photos and great service 😎
What is the best time for photos at Bavaro Beach at Hard Rock Punta Cana?
Classic light is 2-3 hours after sunrise or 2-3 hours before sunset. At this time, the water has a beautiful, bright color, just like in photos from tropical paradise islands. It is also not too hot, so you can have a comfortable photo session. If you want something more romantic and unique — sunrise and sunset have beautiful light, but the colors will have yellow and orange tones, and this style is not for everyone!
Do you need to book a photographer in advance?
Yes! Good photographers have busy schedules, so it is better to book the day and time of your photo session in advance. Especially from November through March. During the busy season, there are many photo sessions, so it is better to book your date well in advance!
How long does a family photo session last?
From my experience: the faster and more organized a family photo session is, the better the result. Usually, the first 20-30 minutes go smoothly, but then someone (who do you think??? 😅) starts getting tired and cranky.
Does the whole family need to wear matching clothes for a photo session?
Not necessarily, but when everyone wears the same clothes or at least similar colors, everything looks very organized and beautiful! In my opinion, it is very important for the family to look like one group and for no one to stand out too much. If everyone is wearing white and one person is wearing red, that person will stand out a lot. So try to coordinate your outfits!
Can you take photos with small children?
Of course! But there are a few important things to understand about small children. Based on my many years of experience as a photographer in Punta Cana, I can say for sure that children are unpredictable, and their mood can change faster than the weather in the Dominican Republic 😅 So it is very important to catch the moment while they are calm!
What if we don’t know how to pose at all and this is our first photo session?
Everything will be fine! Most people in my portfolio had their first photo session with me, and that did not stop us from getting beautiful photos. I have a secret technique that I personally invented for getting great photos without posing or hard work. Come to a photo session with me, and I’ll show it to you 😇
What if it rains during the photo session?
The main thing is not to think about it too much before the photo session, because you might attract bad weather 😁 Usually, the weather in the Dominican Republic is great, and it does not change in a second! One hour before the photo session, I will check the weather on special websites and will know with 80-90% accuracy that it will not rain.
But there is a problem if you actually want a photo session in the rain! Because catching the rain is much harder than catching good weather! “Why would we want rain?” you may ask … Because rain brings emotions, and you will remember that for the rest of your life. For me, rainy weather is very creative and interesting!
What if there is sargassum seaweed on the beach?
Lately, this has become a real problem. Sargassum is common, but experienced photographers in Punta Cana have learned how to keep it out of the frame. There are certain tricks that make it possible to get clean photos even when there is a lot of seaweed on the beach. And … there is always post-processing, where we can remove the seaweed from the photos digitally.
When are there the fewest people on Hard Rock Punta Cana Beach?
Definitely in the morning, when everyone is still sleeping! Usually, after a fun night, most people sleep in. From my experience — at sunrise and even 1-2 hours after sunrise, the beach is pretty quiet.
Are there waves at Bavaro Beach near Hard Rock?
From what I have seen, the sea near Hard Rock is the roughest! The waves can be very big here, so this part of Bavaro Beach is not the best place for swimming with small children.
Is there natural shade from palm trees at Hard Rock Beach?
Yes, but not much because there are not many palm trees along the shore. This part of the beach is more open.
Is there a reef for snorkeling near Hard Rock Beach?
Only if you are a super professional. There are big waves and open sea here. In my opinion, this is the worst place for snorkeling along all of Bavaro Beach.
Can you see the sunrise and sunset from Hard Rock Punta Cana Beach?
You can see a beautiful sunrise over the sea from the beach. The sunset goes down behind the palm trees.
I hope this story was interesting and the tips were helpful! By the way, after the family photo session, one family decided to do an individual photo session for their daughter, but I will tell you about that in my next article! Thank you for reading, and I wish you not just a good day, but a wonderful one 🙂
