And the reason is pretty simple … not everyone wants to wake up at 4-5 AM while on vacation just for a photoshoot … For early morning fishing? Easy! But for a photoshoot — probably not…

As a creative person, I really love sunrise photoshoots on Bavaro Beach! And I especially like shooting at sunrise because at sunset — everything is completely different! In this article, I’ll tell you about Anna and her boyfriend Arkady, who woke up early to go with her to the photoshoot. By the way, Anna is from the same place as me… and I very rarely meet people from Crimea, so it was twice as nice for me to do this photoshoot 🙃

Sunrise that day was at 6:13 AM, which means the sun appeared on the horizon at exactly that time, and you need to understand that of course we met earlier! Because I also wanted to catch the time BEFORE sunrise. Why? To take some photos during the blue hour! Don’t worry, I’ll explain everything now — what the blue hour and golden hour are, and so on. But while I have the chance, I can’t help but promote myself as a Punta Cana photographer — if you’re interested in photoshoot prices, you can find them at the link below.

And by the way, all the photos in this and my other articles were taken by me and no one else 😇

What are the pros and cons of a sunrise photoshoot?!

Let’s go step by step! Like everything else, there are pros and cons.

Cons:

  • You have to wake up early. Very early…
  • The photos will have a specific type of light — either blue tones or yellow tones. They won’t look like classic bright photos. I’ll add a few examples below.

Well, I think that’s about it. Not too many cons… What do you think? There are many more pros!

Pros of a sunrise photoshoot:

  • You don’t need heavy makeup or a lot of preparation because that’s not the main thing in this type of photoshoot
  • You’ll get unique photos, different from what 98% of people have
  • The earlier you wake up — the more you can do during the day, and every hour counts when you’re on vacation
  • A sunrise photoshoot is like meditation, it has a very special atmosphere
  • And no one will get in the way — most people are usually sleeping in the morning, so this is the least crowded time on the beach

From what I’ve seen as a Punta Cana photographer, people are always very happy during sunrise photoshoots. You would think they’d be sleepy, it’s cool outside, it’s dark, but somehow it’s still so much fun and feels great! Or maybe it’s simply happy people who choose this kind of photoshoot?! What do you think?

What is the best time for a photoshoot on Bavaro Beach?

There is no single “best” time because everything is relative and everyone has their own preference. Personally, I like the light from 9 to 10-11 AM, which is about 2-3 hours after sunrise. I also like the blue hour and golden hour. Ha ha ha, and here we are back to the blue hour — what exactly is it? Interestingly, many people know about the golden hour. Usually, it’s the time from about 20-30 minutes to 1 hour right after sunrise. The light during this time has a golden color, which is why it’s called the golden hour 🤓

But what about the blue hour? This is a less popular term. It’s about 15-25 minutes BEFORE the first rays of sunlight. The light usually has a blue tone. That’s why it’s called the blue hour. Although whoever came up with the name wasn’t completely honest… there’s no full hour at all. Because 1 hour before sunrise — it’s simply dark. It’s really about 15 minutes before sunrise. But then again, they couldn’t exactly call it — the blue 15 minutes 😅

This time is perfect for silhouette photos, so when I do a sunrise photoshoot in Punta Cana, I always meet my clients 20-30 minutes BEFORE sunrise.

Sunrise or sunset — what is the best time for a photoshoot in Punta Cana?

Now that’s the right question! It’s not even about the light itself, but about its direction and the number of people on the beach. On Bavaro Beach, the sun rises over the ocean, and the light coming from the ocean looks magical. We also shouldn’t forget that this is the time when Bavaro Beach has the fewest people. Bavaro Beach is public, and even though it stretches for 12-13 kilometers, there are always a lot of people there, but in the morning — no one!

By the way, I wrote a very detailed article about Bavaro Beach, and I’m adding it here!

How to prepare for a sunrise photoshoot?

As I said before, you don’t need much preparation for this type of photoshoot. The most important thing is not to go to bed too late, so you can wake up early and not feel sleepy. As for clothes — I would choose light-colored clothes and avoid very bright colors. For the style — something comfortable that makes you feel relaxed. Maybe very light makeup… no heavy makeup!

Where does a sunrise photoshoot take place on Bavaro Beach?

There are actually not that many locations, but the exact place is not very important because the focus here is on you and the sunrise. As a reference, the photoshoot takes place in the lower Bavaro area, around El Cortecito, Los Corales, and Bibijagua beaches.

Can you combine a sunrise photoshoot with a regular photoshoot?

Yes! Although in my opinion, the light an hour after sunrise is not strong enough for bright colors. Still, I do this all the time. That’s exactly what we did during this photoshoot. We spent so much time talking about our homeland that we didn’t even notice how 30-40 minutes passed after the sunrise photoshoot. So we decided to take a few more photos with regular daylight 🤪

A sunrise photoshoot is not about the photos, it’s about the feeling, the emotions, and the memories of this experience. It’s when you look at the photos and remember that day, feeling the same emotions you had at that moment. Waking up early, getting to the photoshoot location, aromatic coffee, splashes of cool water on the beach … That’s exactly what this photoshoot was for — not just to capture a picture. But to capture your emotions…

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What time does a sunrise photoshoot start in Punta Cana?

Sunrise time in Punta Cana and Bavaro is very consistent. Almost all year round, it’s between 6 and 7 AM. But to catch the blue hour, we usually start the photoshoot 20-30 minutes before sunrise.

How long does a sunrise photoshoot last?

Usually about an hour — around 20 minutes before sunrise and 30-40 minutes after.

Why is it better to take photos at sunrise?

On Bavaro Beach and the beaches of Punta Cana, the light coming from the ocean is more beautiful. It’s also the least crowded time of the day, so no one will get in the way during the photoshoot.

Where is the best place for a sunrise photoshoot in Punta Cana?

It can be Bavaro Beach, the wild Macao Beach, or the beaches of Uvero Alto. If you have access to Cap Cana and Punta Cana, there are beautiful beaches there too.

Is Bavaro Beach good for a photoshoot?

Of course, it’s one of the most popular beaches for a photoshoot in Punta Cana!

Are there many people on Bavaro Beach in the morning?

No. Sunrise is the time when there are the fewest people on the beach.

What is the weather like in Punta Cana early in the morning?

It’s usually a little cloudy, but without rain. Clear skies without clouds are less common.

What should you do if it rains on the day of the photoshoot?

Usually, we know about it a few hours before the photoshoot, so we can do the photoshoot later that same day or move it to another day.

Do you need shoes for a beach photoshoot?

You mostly need shoes to get to the photoshoot location. During the photoshoot itself, we usually don’t wear shoes. However, if your feet are very sensitive, then of course you can and should wear shoes!

Can you do a family sunrise photoshoot?

Yes, but it’s not the best idea. It’s usually very difficult with kids. A sunrise photoshoot is better for a couple or as an individual photoshoot.

How soon will the photos be ready?

Every photographer delivers photos on a different schedule. Personally, I deliver the photos the next day. For other photographers, 1-2 weeks is considered normal, but some may take as long as a whole month.
